What is filament and what is it used for?
Filament is the raw material used in 3D filament deposition modeling (FDM/FFF), i.e., plastic filament that a 3D printer uses to build a piece layer by layer. Filament is used in the manufacture of products by 3D printing, including spare parts, prototypes, scale models, protective covers, and products for various purposes.
How does filament work in a 3D printer?
The hot end and nozzle of a 3D printer heat the filament to the specified printing temperature. Different filament materials require different printing temperatures. The printer extrudes the molten material from the nozzle and deposits it according to the 3D model instructions, forming the object layer by layer into a product that matches the 3D model.
What should you consider when choosing filament for 3D printing?
When selecting materials, it is important to consider the intended use of the product and what properties it should have. Always take the following factors into account:
- Operating temperature
- Mechanical load
- Chemical exposure
- Outdoor or indoor use
- Required measurement accuracy
For example: Outdoor use requires heat and UV resistance. Industrial use requires heat, chemical, and impact resistance. Lighter materials are sufficient for indoor use.
